• According to the latest annual report of the Institute of Weights and Measures Administration, one of the main factors in the low level of weight inspection of vehicles is the inadequate number of weighbridges installed by many local authorities. The point is also made that the owner can be compensated if his vehicle is made to travel more than one mile to be weighed and is then found to be within the legal limits.
The report states that of 12,136 vehicles officially weighed last year 2243 were overloaded — 18 per cent. The standards of law enforcement are so poor, says the report, that, on the assumption that they will not be checked, even the vehicles belonging to otherwise reputable firms are being overloaded.
