Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Minister for Transport Industries, Mr John Peyton, will seek backing for a resolution supporting the principle of common international noise limits for vehicles when he chairs the meeting of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport in London next week.

The meeting, to be attended by ministers from up to 18 member countries, will also hear a Franco-British progress report on the Channel Tunnel; but the new Chunnel feasibility report will not be available for another two or three weeks.

This 35th session of the ECMT will be the second such meeting to be held in London. Items on the agenda include weights and dimensions of road vehicles; combined road-rail transport; the financing of urban public transport; and road safety.

The conference, which normally holds two meetings each year, was formed in 1953 under the guidance of the Organization for European Economic Co-operation. It is intended to provide a forum in which important inland transport questions can be discussed, and its meetings currently have added importance because of the EEC's developing transport policies.

Eighteen countries are members of the conference; they are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, France, Germany,Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Yugoslavia. Japan and the United States of America send observers.

A report of the London meeting will appear in CM on June 16.
