A NEW 110 ft. x 133 ft. transit shed iThin the modern manner and materials —prefabricated reidorced concrete clad with corrugated asbestos sheeting—has added considerably to the facilities of S. E. Thomas and Son, Ltd.. express snialls carrier. of Aylesford. near Maidstone, Kent.

Theshed, designed as an extension of the existing modern premises, virtually doubles the. square footage of the main depot buildings.

The roof is carried on two 55-ft. spans, with trusses and stanchions 19 ft. apart to give 14 vehicle bays down each side of the building. The loading bank occupies one entire span and is 57 ft. wide by 133 ft. long, giving 9 ft. 6 in. of space for each of the 28 vehicles it accommodates. The other 55-ft. span gives a completely enclosed unloading area on one side of -the bank, the opposite side of which has roller-shutters and a 13-ft. canopy down its length.

Height of the bank is mainly 3# ft. It is surfaced in 5-in, reinforced concrete, and each edge has a generous rubbercapped wooden fender. The bank is

divided into 28 spaces—one for each of the 22 smalls delivery services, and six for off-loading and large consignments. Access is by 20 ft. x 14 ft. light-alloy sliding doors at each end of the shed.

The shed is well lit by 28 panels of translucent glass-fibre in the roof in daytime, and a total of 23 8and 5-ft. fluorescent lamps for night use.

An 8-ft.-wide, 1-in-7 ramp gives access to the loading bank from the adjoining

warehouse, and the traffic office (448 sq. ft.) has been set on stilts in the warehouse at the end of and 3 ft. atiove the level of the bank. A platform and stairs in front of the offices interconnect offices, bank and warehouse.

The new shed has a total area of 15,000 sq. ft., and has been sited in such a way that all stores communicate with it. Existing premises include 20,000 sq. ft. of warehouse aCcommodation, a 1,800sq-ft. fitters' shop and a greasing bay of 900 sq. ft., where all repairs and maintenance, including body painting, are carried out.

The Thomas organization operate 32 vehicles-27 vans (rigid and articulated), four trucks and a tow-bar trailer. There is a policy of standardization on Bedfords.

The company's field of operation is Kent, Sussex and Surrey, divided into 22 areas in most of which 24-hour delivery is made. An average of 1,000 consignments pass over the loading bank each night. Traffic is handled for all parts of the country, as is air freight, and a wide range of goods is stored, mainly foods and household requisites.

Practically all goods in the warehouse are palletized. most of the pallets being of the 40 x 40 in. four-way type, and two fork-lift trucks are employed.
