ANEW Matbro, Ltd„ tractor shovel, the Series 11 Mastiff featuring an ingenious system of centre-point steering and numerous improvements over previous models, was demonstrated at Gatwick Airport recently.
The shovel, for which overseas demand is at present higher than home requirements, is the result of five years development work and field trials by Matbro, Ltd. (Horley, Surrey). Its versatility and robustness were exemplified in a short but impressive display of earth moving on badly rutted and muddy ground at Gatwick.
Technically the Series II Mastiff is an improvement in a number of details over the original Series 1. In all, 25 modifications are listed by Matbro, including working load increased by 25 per cent. to 5,000 lb.; Dunlop disc brakes at all four wheels; lower centre of gravity by the repositioning of certain components; and improved maintenance facilities. In addition, the external appearance of the unit has been improved.
Working principle of the original design is still the most important feature of the Series II, however. This is the use of nonsteering axles attached to articulated front and rear ends, the point at which the two parts are pivoted being at the centre of the wheelbase. Both axles are driven.
A 5.4-litre 6-cylinder Ford diesel engine giving 96 b.h.p. at 2,250 r.p.m. is fitted. Transmission is through a 14-in. Brockhouse torque convertor coupled to an epicyclic gearbox in unit with a transfer gearbox. There are four forward and two reverse speeds. The drive to the front
axle is through a one-piece propeller shaft.
The engine and transmission units are mounted in the rear portion whilst the front half, which is the part moved for steering, carries the power-assisted steering and linkage, the hydraulic mechanism for the bucket and an improved allweather cab. Tyres fitted are 14.00-24. 8-ply.
Cost of the unit is £4,995, and delivery is from three to four weeks.
