CALIFORNIA'S Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board got down to the serious testing of exhaust fume control devices early last month.
Preliminary trials are designed to eliminate from further testing those devices that fail to reduce hydro-carbons to a minimum 275 parts per million, or 80 per cent. below current exhaust•levels, and carbon monoxide down to no more than 1.5 per cent. by volume-60 per cent, less than in normal exhausts.
Devices which satisfy these reqpirements will then have to undergo lengthy durability and operating temperature tests, and it is not expected that final results will be known until late this year.
Of the 15 different devices so far submitted to the Board, one or two are the work of private inventors, but the majority are products of well-known engineering firms.
