NOTHER haulage wage claim is about to be presented by the unions to the Road Haulage Wages Council. An increase of 22s. a week in the basic wage is to be asked for, and also a reduction in the working week from 44 to 42 hours, The unions say they are making the claim now because it took so long to negotiate the last settlement—the six per cent, increase which started from December 19 last year, six months after the claim was first submitted.

The Cost Here is an example of what this increase would mean to hauliers, if granted in full: the driver of a goods vehicle with a carrying capacity of over five tons and up to 10 tons based in a Grade 1 area at present receives £9 5s. 6d. for a basic 44-hour week. When he works a 60-hour week he receives £14 Os. 4d.

If the increase were granted he would receive £10 7s. 6d. for a reduced basic week of 42 hours, and £16 15s. lid, for a 60-hour week—an increase of £2 15s. 7d.
