A Means For Maintaining the Water in Individual Vehicle Radiators at a Predetermined Temperature During Cold Weather

ALTHOUGH this may not be the time of year to talk about frozen radiators and difficult starting, it is, nevertheless, essential to give consideration to the matter if it he the intention to install a really effective system for the prevention of such troubles.

To be able to keep the water in the radiator of each machine at operating temperature, irrespective of outside conditions, is, undoubtedly, the ideal method, and in the Radright system, which has been perfected by the CarrierRoss Engineering Co., Ltd., this end is achieved.

The plant consists essentially of a pressure-controlled boiler installation supplying steam at a governed pressure through steam mains, to various points in the garage. From these points, flexible connections, equipped with a special quick-release Radright coupling, are arranged. These couplings are designed to prevent the leakage of steam or water, both during coupling and uncoupling.

When connected to this system, the water in the radiator can be maintained at any predetermined temperature, which means that the engine will remain quite free on the coldest morning, the crankcase oil remains fluid, and thus fuel wastage, attendant upon warming up, is avoided.

The design of the Radright system is such that a choice of several methods of installation is given, the three most generally adopted being the overhead, the wall and the trench.

As to which type is chosen will depend upon the construction of the garage and the method of parking the vehicles.

We understand that the initial cost of a Radright installation compares favourably with. the more orthodox method of garage heating, but it should be appreciated that the A40 amount of fuel used depends upon the number of vehicles connected up and not on the size of the building in which they are accommodated.

From the one boiler, unit heaters or other forms of radiation may be introduced, and domestic hot-water supplies may also be obtained: In addition, a means for the removal of mud, etc., from the underside of chassis is available by the use of a steam jet.

It may be of interest to mention that the Radright system is used by the corporations of Halifax, Lancaster. Liverpool, Manchester, Northampton and West Bromwkh, amongst others.
