Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Up to half the UK's recovery trucks could be running illegally, if a survey by Be ordshire police is representative.

Led by Bedfordshire accident prevention officer PC Richard Bratton, several police forces across the South-East checked more than 200 recovery vehicles during May. They found that nearly 50% were defective.

Bratton says that most of the faults were "relatively minor" but several trucks were overloaded and others were issued with prohibitions. One driver was even found to be under the influence of alcohol, and Bratton expects a number of prosecutions to follow.

He launched the campaign to help stamp out cowboy elements in the sector, and believes that police officers as well as recovery operators are now more aware of the complexity of legislation which surrounds the industry.
