Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

STEERING his 4,000-gal. Scammell tanker triumphantly through an opening of 135 in. to win by the narrowest margin in a day of keen competition, S. Rowbottom brought the Manchester LDOY contest to an end on a high note in time for tea.

Other class winners had been amongst the prizes in the seven previous contests in the Manchester area, but not one of the four of last year's winners who attempted to repeat their success achieved a place on this occasion.

The total entry was 12 less than last year, contributory reasons being that the date was later than usual, thereby clashing with holiday week in two or three towns, and the absence of Tate and Lyle.

R. S. Hunt (T, Wall and Sons Ltd.) won Class D by 10 points from no mean rival in S. G. Neate, whose sided Austin looked a picture. Hunt has been with his company for six years and was ninth on his previous appearance in the competition. Consistent throughout, there was no indication that he had not previously driven the 7-ton Thames Trader.
