THE most effective means of reducing road accidents would be to increase the number of uniformed police mobile patrols, suggests the annual report of the Road Operators' Safety Council.
Notwithstanding limitations of manpower, the police were doing a remarkably good job, says the report, but "it is felt that far and away the most effective means of reducing accidents is to increase the number of mobile police in uniform; at the moment they are lamentably few in number."
The report records that 79,809 professional drivers entered the Council's 1963 safe driving competition and 52,887 received awards. Of the 51,953 bus conductors who entered for the " award of merit" competition, 37,614 gained awards.
