5,947 Vehicles Sold Out of 13,166 Offered : 26,500 Still to be Disposed Of

" THE results so far are moderately satisfactory and do nothing to alter my view that in the long run it is a great deal simpler to do mischief than to undo it." The Minister of Transport made this comment upon the progress of denationalization in the House of Commons, last week, in reply to questions put by Mr: Sparks and Mr. Ernest Davies.

The Minister said that of the 13,166 vehicles offered in the first seven lists, 5,947 had so far been sold, or 18 per cent of those with premises and 73 per cent, of those without.

Purchase prices of units sold so far totalled about L7.4m., including sums paid for rights obtained by purchases and property other than vehicles. About 26.500 vehicles were still to be sold..

Latest reports of purchases, as follows, include many concerning units of one and two vehicles.

SCOTLAND The Scottish Licensing Authority has granted special A licences for another nine vehicles (271 tons) taken over by Mr. J. A. Coulthard (Messrs. Hayton Coulthard), Twynholm. Based at Kirkcudbright, the vehicles have been assigned to Milhench and Coulthard, Ltd. Also listed in the current issue of " Applications and Decisions" for the Scottish area are C. Bristow, Ltd., London, who have been granted special A's for two vehicles (7 tons) based at Musselburgh. Earlier purchases by this company have been reported on a number of occasions.

A. Smith (Darvel), Ltd., Darvel, have added another vehicle (3 tons) to the 12 already in operation (The Commercial Motor, May 28).

New purchasers are Mr. T. Q. McGawn, Ayr, six vehicles (19 tons), and Mr. J. McBride, Dalkeith. one vehicle (31 tons).

NORTH-EAST

Another purchase has been made by Mrs. M. D. Hunter, 28 Side, Newcastle upon Tyne, whose acquisition of two vehicles was reported in The Commercial Motor on June 11. One vehicle (5 tons 3 cwt.). based at 1 Ord Street, Newcastle upon Tyne,, is concerned. Four vehicles, two from Ulverston, Derby, and two from Gravelly Lane, Erdington, Birmingham, have gone to Mr. G. H. Dowland, Poplars, Long Bank, Birtley, Co. Durham. Makes are not known, but they are understood to be 12and 14-tonners.

These are the first purchases of transport units to be made by Mr. Dowland, who intends to recommence his prenationalization services to Newcastle upon Tyne, Derby, Birmingham and the Midlands. He is awaiting news of further tenders.

NORTH-WEST A unit consisting of five eight-wheelers and a six-wheeler has been taken over by Woodcock's Transport (Chorley), Ltd., Park Road Garage, Heskin, near (Thorley, who plan to start a general haulage service from next Monday. They operated a considerable fleet before their business was taken over by the British Transport Consmiss' on

Six vehicles and three trailers (33; tons) have been acquired by Johnson Wild and Co., Ltd., The Woodlands, Ashton Road, Newton-le-Willows. They have assigned two of these vehicles to Mr. George Smith, 357 Downhall Green Road. North Ashton, Wigan. The North-Western Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to J. W. Rice and Co., 24-26 New Bird Street, Liverpool, I. for three vehicles (17 tons); Mr. Robert Burton, Becchcroft, Woodplumpton Road, Cadlcy, Preston, two I/eh:cies (91 tons); and James Riding, Ltd., 5 Church Street, Liverpool, 20, one vehicle (2f tons).

A number of assjanments has been made by Cusick (Oldham), Ltd., 179 Grange Avenue. Werneth, Oldharn, who have acquired 40 vehicles and 10 trailers. Two vehicles (121 tons) have gone to Bolton Transport Facilities, Ltd_, Maple Street, Bolton; two vehicles and two trailers (141 tons) to Mr. Walter South. worth, Park Farm, Liverpool Road, Rufford, near Ormsk irk and one vehicle (31 tons) to Mr. James Wardell, Badgers Croft Farm, High Legh, Knutsford. The acquisition of a unit by Mr. Wardell was reported in The Commercial Motor on March 12.

Messrs. J H. Henderson and Sons. The Garage. Alston, Cumberland, have taken over a Leyland 15-tonncr from the British Road Services' depot at Third Avenue. Trafford Park. Manchester. It will be added to the five vehicles which this concern run on services in the six northern counties and southern Scotland.

YORKSHIRE AREA

A further 10 vehicles have been taken over by Baldry's Ltd., fruit, carrot and potato merchants, and assigned to Baldry's (Haulage), Ltd., North Newbald, York. Details of this company's activities were pahlkhed in The Commercial Motor on June II.

Mr. E. A. Moffatt, 80 Sleaford Road, Boston, Lines, has purchased another onevehicle unit. As with the one reported last week, this has been assigned to Boston Stevedores, Ltd. (Tower Hill Transport Co.), The Docks, Boston, and will be

based at 20 Hounsfield Road, Sheffield, 3.

Other purchases reported this week are as follows: Mr. W. Varah, 35 Quarry Field Lane. Wickersley, Rotherham, two vehicles; Messrs. E. D. and G. Brown (Messrs E. Brown and Sons), Queensgate Filling Station, Beverley, two vehicles; Mr. P. V. W. Clift, New Row, Boroughbridge, one vehicle; and Mr. F. Heaton, 18 Moorland Drive, Birkenshaw, two vehicles.

WEST MIDLANDS

Ernest Transport, Ltd., Speedwell Road, Birmingham, 25, have been notified of the success of two more tenders, this time for five Austin 5-tonners. The units were 2392 and 2397. Previous purchases of this company were reported on March 12 and May 7. Ernest Transport, Ltd., who have been operating for 30 years, now have a fleet of 41 vehicles.

Unit 2568 (Rugby), comprising two vehicles (6 tons), has been purchased by Messrs. W. G. Goddard and Son. Newland Street, Rugby. The vehicles are Thornyeroft 6-tonners.

Two Vulcan 6-7-tonners with Perkins oil engines acquired in unit 2794 by Messrs. C. J. Burton and F. G. S. Hudson, 68 Uplands Avenue, Blackheath, have now been divided between the two purchasers who are running separate concerns from the same address.

Messrs. D. Pritchard and Co., 84 Station Road, Walsall, who have taken over a Scammell 15-tonncr from Wolverhampton (unit 2615), are engaged mainly on contract-hire work for Messrs. J. B. and S. Lees, West Bromwich, and Duport Foundries, Tipton. Their fleet now totals seven The Scammell will be used to operate a general long-distance service. Other acquisitions reported in the West Midlands area this week are as follows: Mr. D. D. Price, Romsley Garage, Romsky, one vehicle (6i tons); Mr. Arthur Smith, 255 Lawley Street, Birmingham, one vehicle (3 tons): Mr. E. H. Crinage, Rymax Works, Bedford Street, Coventry. two vehicles, one articulated, (61 tons): and Henry Poole and Son, Ltd., 21 Hunters Road, Hockley, one vehicle (4f tons).

Special A licences have been granted by the West Midland Licensing Authority to Mr. L. A. Trow, 312 Shirley Road, Acock's Green, Birmingham, 27. for two vehicles (81 tons), and A. and H. Davey (Roadways), Ltd., Vernon Road, Stoke on-Trent, two vehicles (6 tons). Mr. Trow's licence also includes two meat containers (21 tons). An earlier purchase of A. and H. Davey (Roadways), Ltd., was reported on Febrhary 12.

EAST MIDLANDS

Two units, 1213 (Pode Hole) comprising two vehicles: and 2713 (Bourne). folir vehicles. are the latest acnuisitions of Reads of Peterborough, Ltd., Stone Lane. P-.-rborough, who already have two ex-1R.R S. vehicles. Their fleet now comprises five Dodge models, one a 10-tonner and he others 6-7-tonners, two Fordson Thames 6-7-toriners and a Maudslay 8-tonner.

Before they were nationalized. Reads operated a daily service between Peterborough and London and regular services to the Midlands and the north. They have already resumed their London service. which is now running nearly every day, and hope soon to recommence the services to the Midlands and the north. A general and furniture removal service to any part of the country is also planned.

The vehicle bought by Mr. H. Boyce. 89 Rectory Road. Pitsea, Essex (unit 2428. St. Albans) is a 1951 Thames 5-cu.-yd. tipper. Mr. Boyce, who is now operating under the name of Messrs. H. Boyce and Son. was a coal merchant and haulage contractor until he sold his business six years ago. He is using the vehicle he has taken over as a lever to re-enter the industry.

Mr. Boyce is particularly interested in doing work for housing contractors, anywhere in the country, and is open to offers for any other type of work for which the vehicle is suited. tit 2558 (Northampton) is the third surth to be purchased by Mr. A. SOUTHERN AREA The South Eastern Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to the following: Vcctis Shipping Co., Ltd., Town Quay, Newport, I. of. W., four vehicles (101 tons); Mr. A. Rawlings, 4...enoxdale Farm, Medstead, Alton, one vehicle (21 tons) and Mr. C. S. Taylor, 37 St. James's Street, Portsca, Portsmouth, one vehicle and a trailer (4 tons).

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES Two Croydon units (2381 and 2383), comprising three Bedford vans and a Commer van, were taken over on Monday by Mr, R. G. E. Pierce (Messrs. E, Pierce Transport). Brook Valley, North Holmwood, Dorking. The total unladen weight involved was 12 tons 6 cwt. 'Iwo of the vans are to be replaced with lorries.

Mr. Pierce, whose business was nationalized in September, 1951, has recently been running three vehicles under C hiring licences. He hopes to make more

purchases of transport units. A general service to all parts is to be operated.

Two Bedford-Scammell 7-8.1on articulated outfits which have been assigned to Blomtield II tau liers ), Ltd.. I ronbridge Wharf, Lanrick Road. London. E.14, by Cleeve Hill Transport. Ltd., 98 Prestbury Road, Cheltenham, Glos, are to he used on a night trunk service to the Liverpool area.

Before their interests were nationalized. the company was known as Blomfield (Transport), Ltd. The directors are Messrs. J. F. and T. R. Blomfield.

Five vehicles (14 tons) have been taken over by Mr. A. Firmin, Morden, Kent. The units concerned, both at Brighton, were 2502 and 2506. Another Bnghton unit, 25115. comprising one vehicle (3 tons), has gone to Mr. W. Field, Cranleigh. Surrey. Unit 2512 (Guildford), comprising five vehicles and one additional (14 tons), has been acquired by James Astridge and Son, Ltd., Ashtemi, Surrey. Ampee Transport Co., Ltd., 640 High Road, London, E.11, have had their tender accepted for unit 2429 (Slough), one vehicle (5 tons).

A Scammell eight-wheeler and an oilengined Dodge, purchased by Messrs. C. Whitham and Sons (Whitham's Transport), II Market Street, Droylsden, near Manchester, and based at 170 Knollmead, Tolworth, Surbiton, Surrey, are now operating a general service between London, Liverpool and Manchester.

If their tender S for other transport units are accepted, Whitham's are hoping to introduce a night trunk service between these points, " or any other towns where suitable traffic can be obtained."

The Metropolitan Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to the following: Beck and Pollitzer, Ltd., Universal House, Southwark Bridge, London. S.E.1, four vehicles (10 tons 16 cwt.) based at Lambeth Road, London, S.E.1; Mr. J. Baker, 557a London Road, High Wycombe, Bucks, two vehicles (41 tons); C. Bristow, Ltd., 123 Solebay Street, London, E.1, six vehicle (341 tons); and Osborn Transport Co., Ltd., 1 Imber Close, I,ondon. N.14, two vehicles (61 tons) based at 52 Lambton Road, London, N.I9.

Special A licences have been granted by the South Eastern Licensing Authority to: S. E. Thomas and Son, Ltd., for one vehicle (1 ton) based at Station Road, Aylesford, two vehicles (6 tons) based at Chilham Saw Mills. Chilham, and two vehicles and two trailers (10 tons) based at Shortie Cross Road, Shorne, Gravesend; Mr. %V. E. Reeve, The Garage, Bluett Street. Maidstone. two vehicles (6 tons): Mr. S.
