Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Selected Information which is likely to be of Interest to Makers, Owners, and their Buyers.

Manufacturer's Name Wanted.

Amongst the enquiries we have received this week is one in which a request is made for the name of a manufacturer— preferably in the Midlands—who makes copper and brass wire-gauze, which is suitable for use in petrol and oil strainers. We shall be glad to receive the names of any firms who are in a position to supply considerable quantities of this material at manufacturers' prices.

Ball Bearings.

L. THIRKETTLE (Bristol).—The ball bearing about which you enquire is known as either the " D.W.M." or the " D.W.F." Both names are descriptive of the same bearing, a circumstance which is responsible for a great deal of confusion. This craze for laconic alphabetical trade-descriptions and trade-marks is gradually tending to make one brand of article indistinguishable from another. For instance, we know of the " D.W.F.," the " D.W.M.," the "D. and F.," and the " D.K.F.," which are supposed to indicate ball bearings to the puzzled purchaser. The growth of this practice is exemplified in other directions by the recent action between the " A.B.C." bread and tobacco people as to who should be permitted to utilise the kindergarten trade-mark. The same craze has taken hold of every type of manufacturer, but we should be glad to see it realised that the practice has been overdone and might well be abandoned.

Ludwig Loewe and Company, Limited, of 3o, Farringdon Road, E.C., is the English agent for the " " ball bearing, and, in response to our request, we have been furnished with the following explanation of the reason why this particular bearing has become known by two names. The actual manufacturer is the Deutsch Waffen und Munitions-fabrik Gesellschaft, and the trade-mark bears the letters " D.W.M.," but, curiously enough, the bearings have always been stamped " D.W.F.," i.e., the "Munitions" section of the company's title has been dropped. The Loewe Company claims that its bearings are the only ones with continuous races, and informs us that they are being manufactured, in America, by the Hess-Bright Company, under whose name they are being sold, and purchasers are saved an alphab'etical nightmare every time they have occasion to think of ball bearings.

The "New Era" Fire Extinguisher for Taxicabs.

We illustrate herewith the new type of fire extinguisher which has been specially adapted to the requirements of motorcab owners by the Valor Company, Limited, of 9, Bush Lane, Cannon Street, E.C. The reservoir is substantially built up of sheet steel, lead-coated throughout to prevent corrosion. The seam, which is a possible source of trouble in appliances of this description, owing to the likelihood of rough handling, is lap-jointed, riveted, and thoroughly soldered together. A compact tin case is provided, and this contains the entire extincteur ; the makers will colour and letter the case to correspond with the rest of the, cab to which it is to be attached. Although this pattern has not been on the market very long, the Valor Company has already disposed of 5,500 of the type ; an order for Soo has been dealt with from one London cab company alone. The funlist price of the one-gallon " cab " pattern is 455., and that of the recharges 2S. 3d. each. The principle on which these chemical extincteurs operate is too well known to need recapitulation here, but the Valor Company employs a specially composed charge, and claims that it is a great deal more _effective than the ordinary charge of bicarbonate of soda and sulphuric acid, which, in conjunction, create carbonic acid gas. The Scotland Yard authorities insist that each motorcab which is passed into service shall carry an extincteur of not less than one-gallon capacity. Mr. Routledge, the London manager of the Valor Company, informs us that several leading insurance companies grant a rebate when the New Era fire extinguisher is carried on a motor vehicle. We presume, however, that this arrangement would be obtainable by the employment of any recognised make of chemical fire extinguisher. The difficulty of getting at the seat of a fire renders the use of a liquid .extincteur advisable ; various kinds of powder have been employed, but they cannot be easily directed.
