writing on this part of the daily and weekly record should make for more easily analysed sheets, for the weekly sheet is similarly laid out. Proposed further regulations might require starting and finishing times to be written in also however.

For the driver, this system should be easier to compile and should result in fewer misunderstandings once he has become familiar with the system and the 24-hour markings.

The remaining boxes are : 8 and 9, the place of commencing and finishing duty; 10, permitted gross weight of the vehicle if a goods vehicle; 10a, for passenger transport drivers to show the system of daily rest they have adopted; 11, for starting and finishing mileage readings (deducting one from the other shows distance covered).

Total rest

Box number 12 which is symbolised by a bed sur mounted by an asterisk or star is intended to show the total daily rest period between periods of. duty. Here it is important to realise that the period shown on the example, from midnight to 07.00hrs when the driver commenced duty, is to be added to the period between finishing duty and midnight on the previous day (September 6). In the example it has been assumed that this driver finished work at 19.00 hrs (7pm) on the previous day so that the total in box number 12 is 12 hours.

The period from 18.00hrs (6pm) till midnight on this example sheet is to be added to the daily rest period shown at the beginning of the next sheet.

Boxes 13 to 15 merely detail the total driving hours and time spent on other duties. Box 16 is for the driver's signature The weekly sheet, also reproduced here (Fig 3) is self explanatory once the system of symbols has been understood.

One last word : no erasures, corrections or additions must be made. If a mistake is made in compiling the record, it must be explained in box 16 under the heading of "remarks."
