Drivers sit-in protest

ABOUT 30 drivers, mechanics and office staff employed by Southern Car Delivery, Warrington, are staging a sit-in in protest against the closure of the depot.
They promised that they would do all in their power to prevent the shut-down. "There are still 250 new cars in here, paid for by dealers, but they will not leave the depot until we receive some satisfaction," said the spokesman, Mr Frank O'Dea. "We intend to stay here night and day."
The men claim that the parent firm, Silcock & Coiling Ltd, of Halewood, has refused to discuss redundancy terms or to offer alternative employment. Mr O'Dea said they had been trying to get more information but had not received notices in written form. It was only when they decided on the sit-in that they were informed of the -date of the closure.
A spokesman for Silcock & Coiling said the firm had been forced to close four depots because of a 24 per cent drop in delivery volume of cars. About 120 employed at various locations throughout the country12 per cent of their total workforce—are being made redundant.
