Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RISING labour charges make it increasingly necessary for transport operators to keep track of the time spent by their employees on individual tasks. Equipment for this purpose is being made by the National Time Recorder Co., Ltd., Cray Avenue, St. Mary Cray, Kent.

Time cost on a vehicle repair, for instance, need not be a matter of guess

work on the part of the fitter concerned. A job card can be stamped at the beginning and end of the task, so that the work can be accurately costed.

In vehicle operation, a journey card may be stamped at times of departure and return and, if necessary, a small machine may be carried on the vehicle to ascertain loading and unloading times for certain types of traffic. The National company offers a compact machine measuring 9 ins. by 8 ins. by I ft. for such purposes. It has a metal case and weighs about 20 lb.

The body of the machine houses an eight-day lever movement and there is an aperture at the top over which a. card may be placed for the year, month, date, hour and minute to be impressed

upon it by a punch. Cards can be supplied to suit customers' requirements and guides can be fitted to the machine so that a card can easily be stamped in the desired place.

This model costs £37 2s. 6d., including purchase tax. A larger type, costing £41 12s. 6d., including purchase tax, has a wooden case, and spring or electric movements are optional. The stamp of this model, the Universal, operates downward at the depression of a lever. The card is placed face upwards to be marked, the correct division being aligned with an indicator. In this respect, the Universal differs from the smeller model, on which the card is placed face downward, and a guide, which has to be re-set, is required.

Either of these machines may be hired for 7s. 6d. a week. Service includes the provision of cards and renewal of inked ribbons, besides any necessary mechanical attentions.
