Mr. S. D. Herington, for the applicant, revealed that since 1938 running costs had gone up from•9.37d. per mile to 23.54d. per mile. Taking into account the increased mileage since 1938, the concern had to find another 1437,534 a year, compared with 1938.

Economies enabled the company to absorb about £230,000 of this amount. The increased fares proposed, which meant, in the main, the addition of ld. to single fares and 2d. to returns, were estimated to augment revenue by 154,000 a year.

Application was granted.

MINISTRY "OPTIMISTIC" TO EXPECT EARLY RETURNS

THE Ministry of Transport was

"exceedingly optimistic" if it expected passenger operators to return statistics so soon after the end of the fiscal year, stated Mr. J. M. C. Higgs, M.P., when he defended Samuel Johnson (Supreme). Lid., at Stourbridge, last week, against a charge of failing to make an annual financial and statistical return.

Mr. R. K. Cooke, for the Director of public Prosecutions, said that the company's accounting year ended on March 31 and the returns had to be sent in by June 30, Requests were sent to the defendant, but the return was not made until December 11, by which time a summons had been issued.

C.A.V. EXECUTIVE CHANGES I T was announced by C.A.V., Ltd., on

Tuesday that Mr. E. L. Cadwallader, who is 70, has relinquished his executive appointment, but retains his seat on the board. He will continue as con sulting director. . Mr. Hubert G. Mason, now appointed joint general manager, is CA.V.'s director of sales and service, and a member of the board of Joseph Lucas (Exports), Ltd. He has been with the C.A.V. organization for 26 years and was appointed to the board in 1945 He will continue to control the sales and service activities of the company..
