COACH FARES: DELAY IN DECISION

A LTHOUGH they held their inquiry PI on November 25 into a proposal to raise fares on express services to and from London, the Metropolitan, SouthEastern and Eastern Licensing Authorities had not advised the Central Fares Committee of their decision on Tuesday of this N•velc. The operators affected are deeply concerned about the delay.

It seems possible that the British Transport Commission has an interest in the subject, having regard to the need for correlating fares by road and rail.

PRIVATE ENTERPRISE PAYS BIGGER DIVIDENDS

SPEAKING on nationalization, Sir Wm. J. Thomson, DL., LL.D., J.P., chairman and managing director of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., said at the annual general meeting of the company:—

" The L.M.S. and L.N.E.R. companies hold 50 per cent, of our ordinary capital, which, of comae, will go over to the Government . with the railways on January 1, 1948, so that after that date the Government will be taking about half our profits in taxation and half of what is left in dividends. Under these circumstances, it is difficult to see why the Government should want to take over a business that is giving them such a good return."

HIGHER WAGES IN LONDON?

AMONG the labour problems facing the newly created London Transport Executive is a wage claim which has been prepared by the passenger section of the Transport and General Workers' Union, covering the staffs operating road services. It is reported that the claim is sool to be submitted.

"DAILY EXPRESS" NAMES TILLING GROUP

SEVERAL millions more than the group's £8,000,000 assets is suggested by the "Daily Express" as the price for which Sir Frederick Heaton is holding out, in selling Thomas Tilling, Ltd., to the British Transport Commission. It is suggested that other big combines will not be pleased, because early acquisition of a large organization by the B.T.C. would facilitate nationalization on an extensive scale and their hopes of defeating State control through delay would be lost.

Sir Frederick, the " Daily Express" stated, no doubt expects a better price through selling now, than by waiting to be taken over. The report is, of course, pure speculation.

In the issue of "The Commercial Motor" dated December 26, our legal adviser put forward the view that to avoid delay and expense, the Commission might purchase an existing set-up by agreement, possibly giving more than it thinks the compulsory purchase price should be.

HIRE CARS BANNED FROM STATION APPROACH? E'OUR hire-car proprietors were I brought before the magistrates last Friday and were charged with trespassing on the forecourt of Ramsgate Station.

It appears that on the first day of railway nationalization, the cars were plied for hire at the station entrance, a privi lege which had previously been reserved for only one firm. Remanding the men on bail for a fortnight, the magistrates have now to decide whether the public is free to serve the public travelling by nationalized transport.

SECOND THOUGHTS THE 45 employees of the Economic Bus Co., Whitburn, Co. Durham, who were refused re-admission to the National Union of General and Municipal Workers because they refused to sign a declaration to abide by Union orders, have now agreed to give the declaration and have been re-admitted.

PARKING APPEAL SUCCEEDS A FTER a local inquiry, reported in /-1." The Commercial Motor" dated Novembet 7, the Minister of Town and Country Planning has decided that Monty Moreton, Ltd., Nuneaton, should be allowed to park public service vehicles on land in Highfield Road, Nuneaton, for a strictly limited period.

The borough council refused permission to park there, and the company appealed to the Minister, who has ordered that the council shall not take steps to prohibit the use of the ground for a period of six months from November 26, 1947, unless otherWise directed.

NEWCASTLE MUST RAISE FARES I N his annual report, Mr. F. S. Taylor, general manager of Newcastle-onTyne Transport Department. strffses the need for increasing fares if the undertaking is to remain in a sound condition.

In the year ended March 31 last, the department made a net profit of £53,370 after transferring 128,000 for deferred tramway maintenance from the reserve for deferred repairs and renewals, to the credit of the tramway revenue account. After meeting various other payments there was a balance of £41.607 to be transferred to the general reserve fund.

By a resolution of the city council, /50.000 was taken for the relief of rates, but an adjustment in E.P.T. liability for previous years resulted in a tax credit of £50,000 becoming available.
