the vice-chair. • NO MORE SNOW-BOUND ROADS?

DLANS for keeping the roads clear of

snow during the next two or three months are summarized in a New Year's message to members by the National Road Transport Federation. The Federation has been in touch with the Ministry of Transport and other Government departments, and a favourable report has been received on measures taken by local authorities.

Each divisional road engineer of the Ministry of Transport has set up a local committee to consider local measures for keeping the roads free from snow. Area Licensing Authorities have also formed committees to ensure co-operation between cominercial-vehicle users: Local offices of . the •Ministry of Labour are to supply additional labour. where necessary, and snow warnings are to be issued by the ,Meteorological Office. Supplies of foreign salt are being imported. Collieries and factories are being asked to keep snow ploughs, to enable vehicles to enter and leave their premises. In some cases, equipment will be supplied from airfields.

Some 110 Mack artillery tractors will be used, mainly on trunk roads They are being fitted to take high-wing snow ploughs. More snow ploughs suitable for fitting to commercial vehicles are being provided.

THE number of hours to be worked each week in orddr to qualify for the "industrial ten" supplementary clothing coupons will be reduced this year from 22 to 20. Employers should obtain application forms from the local office of the Ministry of Labour.
