New 90 b.h.p. Machine with Pneumatic Tyres Shortly to be Included in Range Handled by Jack 0/ding and Co., Ltd.

'TO the best of our knowledge a 1 wheeled Caterpillar tractor is a new departure. The name, indeed, tands for the track-laying type. Nevertheless, a. model, designated the DW10, having pneumatic-tyred wheels and designed, we understand, primarily for industrial use, will shortly be available in this country and will be distributed by that well-known specialist Caterpillar concern, Jack Olding and Co., Ltd., Caterpillar Island, Hatfield, Hertfordshire.

An accompanying picture gives a good impression of the unaccustomed, modern and certainly pleasing appearance of the machine. Weighing (for shipping) 14,500 lb., having a maximum drawbar pull of 12,000 lb. (1,630 lb.. in top gear) and measuring 15 ft. in overall length, it is powered by a six-cylindered 468 cubic-in, oil engine developing 90 b.h.p, at the governed speed of 1,800 r.p.m., and exerting a maximum torque of 305 lb.-ft. at 900 r.p.m.

It has a speed range of 2.4 m.p.h. to 18.1 m.p.h., and five forward ratios afforded by a gearbox of the constantmesh spur-gear type with pump lubrication. Between engine and gearbox is a single-dry-plate clutch, 16 ins, in diameter, whilst the rear axle is described as of the automatic torquetransfer type.

Two sets of brakes are provided, one operated by vacuum power through hydraulic apparatus and the other by manual effort through mechanical gear. With a wheelbase of 110 ins, and a 68-in, track, the tractor has a ground clearance of 151 ins, and a height of

6 ft. 4 ins, whilst its overall width is

7 ft, 3i ins. On the front wheels are 10 by 20 12-ply tyres whilst those on the rear wheels are 18 hy 24 16-ply.

The drawbar coupling is of the balland-socket type and is mounted 14 ins. forward of the rear axle and 411 ins. above ground level, whilst a pull-hook is provided in front under the sturdy bumper.
