WILLINGNESS on the part of YorkW shire operators of bus services and haulage vehicles to assist in snow clearance and the gritting of roads has been notified to highway authorities in the East and West Ridings by Colonel W. S. Richmond, North-eastern Divisional Road Engineer, Ministry of War Transport.

In a letter to the highway authorities, Colonel Richmond states: " I am informed that nearly all the passenger operators in the East and West Ridings are prepared to assist highway authorities, either by gritting roads or, if possible, fitting snow-ploughs to early morning buses." He also draws the authorities' attention to three of the suggestions which a subscomtnittee of the C.M.U.A.'s North-eastern Division has put forward with reference to the snow-clearance problem.

Colonel Richmond remarks that the suggestion as to the operation of snowploughs by bus and lorry owners may be regarded by the highway authorities as most useful, "hut the difficulty which will be encountered this winter, at any rate, will be that of obtaining ploughs." He advises authorities who wish to consider making use of the suggested assistance to make direct contact with the bus companies and the North-eastern Division of the C.M.U.A., 29, Blenheim Terrace, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds.
