Collect CM tokens for a free Euro Atlas • Road haulage users are being deterred from moving more goods to rail by political uncertainty surrounding its privatisation and the lack of firm prices and timetables, according to a survey and report by the Freight Transport Association.

Freight buyers questioned for the survey say the Government needs to listen to industry, not just passengers and backbenchers.

James Hookham, FTA controller of distribution and environmental affairs, says freight buyers had been encouraged by a "more lateral and flexible approach" to the needs of their customers during last year's rail strike. But he adds that many railfreight users who switched to road during the strike have since returned to rail.

The report calls on BR to attract business from road operators by increasing piggyback services. Aldridge-based haulier P&O Ferrymasters and Carlisle-based Eddie Stobart are among operators to have expressed interest in such services.
