• Business failures in the road transport industry appear to be stabilising, according to a survey of administrative receivership and administration order appointments.

While the economy as a whole suffered 20% more business failures in January compared with the previous month, only two haulage operators— Saver Birch Container Services of Newmillerdam and FI-1 Baker of Bristol—were forced to call in administrative receivers 1CM 26 Jan-1 Feb). An average of four hauliers a month faced administrative receivership last year—in 1993 the monthly average was almost eight.

Across all industry sectors, the figures show greatest improvement in the South-West, East Anglia, Wales, Yorkshir(.. the North-West and Scotland. But there was an increase in appointments in the South.East and East Midlands.
