GORDON SCHAEFER succeeds Lee Morgan as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Caterpillar Tractor company. He has been vicechairman since August last year.
After joining the company from university in 1951, Mr Schaefer held several auditing and accounting positions until 1969, when he became manager of manufacturing systems development.
For three years until 1976 he was manager of the company's Decatur, Illinois, plant. That was followed by his job as a vicepresident responsible for finance and data processing. He has been a director since 1983.
Lee Morgan will continue on the company's board of directors.
