• Free transport — Labour's remedy for London's public transport problems — is quietly down-graded in importance in the Party's latest policy manifesto, published this week. Instead of being an immediate priority, the manifesto now lists fares-free transport as being a "long-term aim".
But if the party is returned to power in the Greater London Council elections in April it will introduce flat fares — possibility of 5p — on the capital's transport. More bus-only lanes and reduced and more expensive car parking in central areas will also help to encourage the use of public transport.
The manifesto also proposes the banning of "juggernaut" lorries from residential areas and the scrapping oT Motorway Ringways I and IL
