Longmont, Colorado, USA, manufacture a dual-drive hub that can be manually adjusted to step-up the drive ratio. Do any accessory manufacturers in this country produce a drive of this kind? The makers state that it can be fitted to vehicles of up to 5-ton capacity equipped with a single driven axle or to any type of four-wheel-drive vehicle, including the Land-Rover.
ANo British company manufactures a twospeed hub and as far as is known a hub of this type is not produced by any European concern.
The use of planetary .gears, located in the hubs, for secondary reduction in conjunction with a single-reduction axle is, however, being increasingly favoured by the makers of heavy trucks in preference to a double-reduction axle.
The possiblity has been discussed of obtaining direct drive by locking-up the planetary gear, which could be done without undue complication, and would give direct drive for light-load running or operating over flat country.
