Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHAT'S more important to used tractor unit customers — a big engine or a big cab?

On balance it's probably the cab. but a lot depends on the choice the buyer is being offered according to Simon Hall of Weston-onthe-Green, Oxfordsh irebased Kel-Berg.

"If it's a 380hp unit then the haulier probably won't buy it, no matter how big the cab is," he says."However, if he's faced with a Daf 95XF Super Space Cab at 430hp and the same model with the smaller Space Cab at 480hp, then he'll probably go for the former.

"In doing so he'll be aware that while it would be nicer to have the 480hp engine, the 430hp will be perfectly capable of doing the job. The point is that the engine has got to be over 400hp."

In making his choice the operator will also he aware that the engine can probably be chipped to produce the extra power he'd like. If that's what he's proposing to do, however, then he should think about the possible impact on residual values, says Hall.

While there are experienced specialists around who are more than capable of chipping an engine properly, there's always the risk that the work will be carried out incorrectly, with damage resulting."Because of that we'd be inclined to devalue or steer clear of any truck we knew had been chipped," he adds.

There is a much simpler and cheaper way of upping a truck's power, says one independent dealer —change the badge on the front: know of several hauliers who used to put 360 badges on 320 Scanias, and the drivers never knew the difference."
