Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Rayven Transport

A planning permission problem has prompted Halesowen, West Midlandsbased, tipper operator Rayven Transport to invest in a Somers mobile column "We discovered to our surprise that we needed permission to get a workshop pit dug in the premises we occupy, and it couldn't be obtained," says Ray Merris.

Bought secondhand, the 30-tonnecapacity four-column lift Rayven had done only 11 months work.

Merris needed a lift or pit because the company's 10-vehicle fleet is gradually swinging away from eight-wheelers to maximum-weight artics. "We can get under an eight-wheeler easily enough without either, but getting under a 6x2 tractor unit is a lot more difficult," he says.

Concentrating on aggregate rather than rnuckaway work, Rayven hauls for UK Coal and Tarmac among others.

Young's

Having relied on a traditional 8-tonne capacity Bradbury lift for almost 30 years, brewer Young's is about to install a 28-tonne capacity Somers mobile column lift in its Wandsworth, London, workshop.

The company runs 20 Volvo 18-and 23-tonne rigid drays, so the newcomer's four columns will gkie t ample strength to lift a fully-laden one if it needs to, says workshop manager Ken Wellbelove.

"We opted for a mobile column lift because we've only got a small garage here, and we're tight on space," he says. "It gives us the ability to put a vehicle on a lift outside if we need to."

One dray that's unlikely to be sent soaring up in the air on a regular basis is the horse-drawn one that Young's still uses regularly to deliver to pubs in the Wandsworth area. Able to haul up to three tonnes of beer, it's immune to soaring diesel prices and never gets a parking ticket.
