A WELSH firm must wait to find out whether its application to add vehicles belonging to another operator to its licence is successful. The decision is subject to satisfactory financial checks.

Bridgetirne Tran sport, of Pontypool, had applied to add vehicles currently operated by Cwrnbran-based William Smith to its licence. Both companies had been called to an inquiry before South Wales Deputy Traffic Commissioner Alan Jenkins. He gave Bridgetime to the end of the year to provide the financial information requested.

For the companies, Paul Carless said Bridgetime's main director was Robert Evans. Smith did not want to continue as a sole trader, but held a licence for 16 vehicles and 16 trailers. He had ceased trading in 2002 due to ill health, surrendering the discs, but not the licence. He had grave financial difficulties and did not operate for six months, hut had slowly come back with one vehicle at a time and had now joined Bridgetime as a director.

Vehicle examiner Robert Williams told Jenkins that in February a vehicle belonging to Smith was given an immediate prohibition for an insecure and rusty wing that had almost broken off.

There were problems with brake lights and fuel pumps. A trailer was given an immediate prohibition marked 'S' for long standing brake defects.

In July there was an accident when one of Smith's trailers became detached from the tractor unit as it approached a roundabout. The locking mechanism on the trailer had missed the kingpin, which damaged the release lever.

Carless said a maintenance check on Bridgetime had proved satisfactory. He claimed the company's finances were more than adequate and if the increases were granted Smith's licence would be surrendered.

Adjourning consideration of disciplinary action against Smith's licence until January, the DTC said that unless it was surrendered by the end of the year it would be revoked.

No financial figures from Bridgetime had been produced but, if they were and proved satisfactory, the variation application by the company would be granted.
