Worthington, of tord Street, Bolton, failed to appear before Halton magistrates to answer 12 allegations of exceeding the permitted daily driving limit and taken insufficient daily rest. He was convicted in his absence.

Senior traffic examiner Keith Henry said the offences came to light during a routine check on the tachograph records of Widnes-based Vic Davies Transport Worthington had been employed by the firm to drive vehicles on regular journeys to Spain. Analysis of the tachograph records revealed Worthington had failed to observe daily rest periods and had also exceeded the maximum daily driving time while making return journeys to the UK.

When interviewed by a traffic examiner. Worthington had said problems with his marriage had caused him to want to get home earlier than he was legally entitled to do.

The magistrates fined Worthington 1300 per offence and ordered him to pay £55 prosecution costs.
