Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Power hydraulic Apparatus in the Design of Which Weight has been Saved but High Efficiency and Strength have been Maintained

T1-1E designing and testing of a tipping gear specially suitable for the 5-ton 30 m.p.h. class of vehicle has been occupying the attention of Edwards Bros. (Tippers), Ltd„ of Bolton, for some time past and, as a consequence, a new type has been introduced.. This has the usual Edbro margin of reserve, enabling it to carry the company's guarantee which gives particularly good cover to users.

In view of the restrictions on weight in this class, particular attention has been given to keeping the figure, in respect of the new model, as loW as possible conducive with satisfactory service under hard conditions.

The design has been prepared with particular regard to the Commer LN5 and Dodge FSF models and similar ,machines. Weight has been reduced by design rather than by any paring down of the separate components. The apparatus weighs only 2 cwt.

As usual, the Edbro patented rams are urd, giving a large dianieter at the base and so providing a substantial means for attachment. Another customary Edbro feature is the four-cylintiered swash-plate pump, which was introduced about two years ago and described in this paper on October 16, 1936. The weight saving is largely accomplished by utilizing the ram cradle as an oil reservoir. Safety valve • e44 devices are, of course, incorporated, and provide an effective protection against the risk of the laden body

descending unexpectedly from its lifted position • asa consequence of apipe breakage or through escape of the fluid through leakage. .

An important feature is the ease of fitting. The ram and cradle unit is bolted to the frame and thelpower takeoff to the gearbox, after whichit is necessary to fit only the feed pipe and

pressure pipe. -•

Edbro tipping gears are supplied .entirely through the trade, and traders carry out the installation work if required. In view, however, of the simplicity of the operations involved, it is hard to visualize the user who was unable to complete the -work himself in a short space of time with a minimum of equipment.

The model inspected by The Commercial Motor is installed in a Commer LINT3 forward-control chassis with bodywork by the Edbro concern, 34-in. by 7-in. tyres, sheet-metal-lined floor, measuring 10 ft. 6 ins, by 6 ft. 6 ins., and detachable 20-in, drop sides, the unladen weight being 2 tons 9+ cwt. The price of the tipping gear has been provisionally fixed at £45.

In the course of test the new gear has been shown to lift a full load in 30 seconds with the engine idling. The demonstration showed a notable smoothness in operation and an absence of any jerking.
