JJALAGE business in connection TIwith Christmas tradeoffers tdenty of scope as yet, and the loads, generally speaking, are small. There is a considerable amount of activity at all timber docks, and it is anticipated that, in the spring, the demand will be greater than for some time past.

There is probably some connection between this anticipated improvement in the timber trade and the returns from local authorities in urban areas. In these returns, which relate to 143 areas (excluding the county of London), plans have been passed for buildings of an estimated cost of over £4,000,000; which is over 30 per cent, more than the amount for a year ago.

North-east Coast.

The coal trade in the Northumberland area has improved considerably ; it is, indeed, reported that the inquiry is actually in excess of the supply, both in respect of steam coal and fuel for house hold consumption. The sales of gas coke, too, are good.

The slight improvement in the Teesside iron and steel industry is being maintained and further expansion of transactions is reported.

Chester-le-Street -Urban District Council has forwarded unemploymentrelief schemes costing £67,000 to the Ministry of Health, and asks the Ministry to approve immediately seven

of the schemes to cost £16,000. At Newcastle, work is about to begin on a £10,000 scheme for extensions to the eye hospital, and Messrs. Newcombe and Newcombe, 23, Eldon Square, Newcastle are the architects. A school to accommodate 400 children is to be built at 13iIlingham, Mr. W. J. Gregory, 3, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1, being the architect.

Yorkshire.

The woollen factories in Yorkshire are busy. Deliveries are still being . made of hosiery yarns in connection with the contracts recently referred to its these columns, although the spate of orders has now abated somewhat. There is some talk of a new industry for the manufacture of " artificial, wool."

Sheffield cutlery concerns are reported to he more busily employed than for some time past. There is, RS yet, no sign of any slacking in the demand for safety razors and blades. There is a big demand for files, table knives and scissors.

Hatfield's has received an order for the equipment necessary for a Salerni coal-refining plant, to be erected in Sheffield. The Park Gate Iron and Steel Co. has opened a new department for the production of steel arches and pit props.

The North Riding Education Committee is to erect new schools at Estop, nide& will cost £15,000.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

There appears to be every hope that the cotton industry of Lancashire will sono be in for a busy time. There is plenty of business moving in the timber trade, according to reports from both Manchester and Liverpool. The demand for leather appears to be stationary, but is reasonably good, so that there is a fair expectation of a steady How of loads of that commodity from Runcorn, Warrington and Liverpool tanneries.

Preston Corporation is inviting tenders for the construction of a junior school in Gseenlands Estate, Ribbleton, Preston, also 41 houses on the Frenchwood Estate. Sanction for the erection of a further 100 council houses at Fleetwood has been granted by the Ministry of Health. The houses will be built an the Flakefleet Estate, will cost 133,774, and work on them is to commence immediately. Plans for the erection of 279 dwelling houses have been passed by Blackpool Corporation.

Midlands.

Hosiery made in compliance with the rush of orders, to which reference has been made herein during recent weeks, is still being dispatched from Leicester, Nottingham, and district, but there are not so many new orders in hand.

The hardware trade in Birmingham and district shows slight improvement, probably seasonal. The effect is most noticeable in connection with the output from brass foundries, and amongst electro-platers and silversmiths.

The West Bromwich local authorities are seeking powers to borrow £115,309 for the construction of additional sewage-disposal works on the Tame, at Rea Hall Farm, also £37,430 for sewerage in Barr Ward.

The prospective establishment of a large" iron and steel works in the Northamptonshire village of Carley is a matter of considerable and immediate interest to hauliers', even though it may be many months before the project comes to fruition.

A new tuberculosis sanatorium, costing £146,000, is to be built at Goseote for Walsall Town CounciL A new school is to be built at Evesham.

London and Home Counties.

There is considerable activity in the docks and principal timber yards. From Bermondsey comes the report that the demand for leather is maintained, althoush most consignments are small.

A new institutian is to be erected in. connection with the • Harold Court Sanatorium, Essex. It is to have accommodation for 200 beds. A. nurses' home is to be built at Alexandra Hospital, Swanley, at a cost cf £15,000 whilst £50,000 is to be spent on extensions to Banning Mental Hospital and a new admission block is to be built at Chartham Mental Hospital at a cost of £30,000. Fareham, Hampshire is to have a new cinema at a cost of /20,000. Two schools are to be built at Deal, one in South Deal and the other in Mill Road. A cinema is to be built in Gladstone Gardens, High Road, Wood Green, whilst -a church is to be erected in Thorpe Bay.

Wales.

Richard Thomas and Co., Swansea, has received an . order for 1,000,000 boxes of tin plates, and Gilbertson's, of Pontardawe, has secured a large order. Carmarthen Town Council is seeking powers to borrow £9,000 in connection with the construction. of a reservoir.

Scotland.

There appear to be prospects of improvement in the shipbuilding industry on the Clyde.

West Country.

The improvement in the movement of timber, referred to in reports from other seaports, is also to be noted in Brietol. A new isolation hospital is to be erected at Bideford, and Bideford and District Joint Hospital Committee has accepted the tender of The Building and Public Works Construction Co., of Swindon, the cost being i15,288.
