Second Year of "Carrying on" the Parade Organization.

It is announced that. the tenth annual inspection of commercial motor vehicles, organized by the Commercial Motor Users Association (Incorporated) with the object of encouraging driv ers, by means ot ninney prizes and other aw aids, to take a personal interest in the driving and condition of their vehicles, and to run them without accident, will take place in London during the month of May, 1910. • The usual assembly, or l'arade, of vehicles will not be held this year, owing to the difficulty of spaiing vehicles from service during the present period of stress. The organization of these annual inspections, which are supported by the Royal Automobile Club and the Society of Motor Manufactuters and Traders, is in the hands of a special committee. The prize fund is subscribed by users, and by manufacturers and suppliers of vehicles, tyres, bodies, fuels and accessories. Prizes will be awarded to drivers for results obtained in written and in oral examinations,_ coupled with inspection of their Vehicles under running conditions.

i In this way t is hoped to carry on the educational work among drivers, which has been one of the aims of the Association since its formation.

Preliminary Arrangements.

ENTRIES.—Entries may be made forthwith (on forms which will be supplied by the secretary), and they should be received not later than the 15th Jan-lary, 1916.. They may be for—

(a) Oral examination for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors; (b) Written examination for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors.;

(c) Oral examination for drivers of petrol vehicles-;

(d) Written examination for drivers of petrol ve'oicles ; JO Oral examination for drivers of electric ve hicles (I) Written examination for drivers of electric vehicles: Drivers linty enter for all three subjects, steam, petrol, and electric, in either oral or written ; but no driver may enter for examinations (a) and (b), (c) and (d), or (e). and (f): Members of the C.M.U.A. may enter any number of their drivers free, and non-members upon payment of a fee of 10s. for each driver entered.

EXAMINATIONS.—The examinations will be based on the information contained in the lectures delivered by the inspecting engineer during 1915, which have been .published in book form under the title of the " Commercial Motor Driver's Handbook " ; copies may be obtained from the secretary of the C.M.U.A., 83, Pall Man, S..W., is. 9d. each, post free. The foregoing lectures will be supplemented by general reviews and problems relating to steam, petrol and electric vehicles, which will be printed and sent to the drivers • by post. The lectures are written and illustrated in a manner which should easily be understood. All drivers are at liberty to write and ask questions arising from the lectures. The oral examinations will be spread over several evenings, and the written examinations will be held on separate evenings.

MARKINGS.—.The inspecting engineer will visit each garage before the written and oral examinations, and his reports on those visits, together with the marks obtained by each driver in the examinations, will be recorded by the committee, and awards based thereop,... Each . driver obtaining more than a _fixed percentage of Marks will receive a money prize, a badge, or a certificate.

(1) C.M.U.A. CHAMPIONSHIP PRIZES (WRITTEN EXAMINATION).

1st prize 25 2nd prize 3rd prize The winners of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will each receive a special badge and certificate, whilst 21 prize winners and each driver who gains more than a certain percentage of marks will also receive a certificate. Winners of 1st prizes in the 1913, 1914, or 1915 examinations are not eligible to take a 1st or 2nd prize in this section, but they will be allowed to sit for the examination, and their order of merit will be announced.

(2) C.M.U.A. GENERAL PRIZES (ORAL ExAmisATioN).

These prizes, which will amount, to about. 250 in total value, sub-divided into cash prizes of £2, and 10s., will be awarded at the discretion of the inspection committee to drivers of vehicles, based on_ the number of marks awarded, Drivers who do well in this examination will also receive certificateS.
