The new fire station at Portsladeby-Sea was opened recently, but the money available did not justify its equipment with a motor fire-engine.
Early sanction is expected, from the Local Government Board, for the loan required by the Morley Town Council. Tenders have been invited, and it has been recommended that a Merryweather engine be purchased.
The Watch Committee of Northampton Town Council has decided (subject to the usual sanction) to obtain a motor fire-engine with ladders attached, pumping 450 gallons per minute, from Merryweather and Sons, Ltd., at a cost of £1,272.
New Motor Fire Apparatus for India.
Lucknow's example has soon been followed by Bombay, the Municipal Council of which has recently ;taken delivery of a 50 h.p. four-cylinder Hatfield motor fire-engine from Merryweather and Sons, Ltd. This machine is of the same pattern as those delivered to the L.C.C. earlier in the year, the engines being capable of travelling at speeds tip to 30 miles an hour, and of delivering 450 gallons of water a minute. The order, together with one for a motor fire-escape and hose-tender, was placed after Superintendent Nicholls, the chief officer of
the brigade, had visited England. Bombay's new Hatfield fire-engine accommodates 10 men, and carries 1,000 ft. of hose. The wheels are fitted with solid-rubber tires, twinsection being on the rear ones. The second Merryweather vehicle supplied to the above municipality comprises a petrol fire-brigade tender carrying a 50 ft. sliding carriage fire-escape, with improved arrangements for shipping and unshipping sonic from tender. As a first-turn-out apparatus, such a machine is reported to be invaluable ; it carries a quantity of hose, as well as two liemik extinctors for dealing with small outbreaks.
Barry Makes Haste.
The Fire Brigade Committee of the Barry Urban District Council (South Wales) is about to purchase a motcr fire-engine, with escape and other appliances. This action has been brought about by the destruction of the Hippodrome Theatre, on which occasion the pressure and appliances available proved inadequate.
