An Iva Motor in Russia.

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

L1078] Sir,-We have much pleasure in enclosing herewith somel, remarkable photographs recently taken by the writer in Russia, showing an lvel agricultural motor doing various kinds of work. The Ivel Co. was specially invited to send one of its latest machines, with a plough, to the Nordlevlandische Ausstellung, which was held at durjew in September, and the interest taken in this machine was pretty considerable. The motor was shown at the exhibition driving a 41 ft. thrashing machine, and at various times during each day the motor was driven to the Ratshof farm, where it was shown at work in a stubble field ploughing with a three-furrow plough. There was always a large number of spectators present., who were greatly interested, and who expressed themselves thoroughly satisfied with the work they saw. We might add that this was one of our standard pattern, fitted with

an 18 h.p.-20 h.p. engine. louis faithfully, for Ivel Agricultural Motors, Ltd.,

A. HOFFMANN,

Manager. 46, Poland Street, London, W.

[We regret that the photographs were too much "out of focus" for reproduction.--E D.1

Messrs. Shoolbred's Results.

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

[1079] Sir,-I have pleasure in giving you a few more details of the cost of running vans, and they may interest you.

Average cost of 35 vans on the road, for first year: repairs, £33 5s. 7d. per van; tires, E30 8.s. 5d.-total, £63 14s. Od.

Average cost of 28 vans on the road, for second year : repairs, £56 18s. 6d. per van ; tires, £39 10s. 7d.-total, £96 9s. id.

Average cost of nine vans on the road, for third year : repairs, 12,54 10s. 3d. per van ; tires, £33 2s. ld.-total, £87 12s. 4d.

Average cost of two vans on the road, for fourth year: repairs, £46 lie. 10d. per van ; tires, £27 14s. 4d.-total, £74 6s. 2d.

Average cost of 74 vans on the road, 35 for first year, 28 for second, nine for third, and two for fourth year : repairs, £45 3s. 5d. per van ; tires, £34 2s. 5d.-total, E79 5s. 10(1.

Average cost of 39 vans on the road, ignoring first year as being too favourable (28 for second year, nine for third year, and two for fourth year): repairs, £55 16s. 10d. per van; tires. £37 8s. 10d.-total, £93 5s. 8d.

As cost of vans for fourth year is so low, I give cost of each van : (1) repairs £73 6s. Od., and tires E23 4s. id. (E96 10s. ]d.)-van just overhauled and condition as new ; (2) repairs 219 17s. 9d., and tires £32 4s. 7d. (£52 2s. 4d.) • -van not overhauled during fourth year, but shortly due for overhaul. Bar accidents, No. 1 van will not require any overhaul during fifth year. " Repairs " include all accidental damage to chassis and body, as we only insure against third-party claims.

My latest estimate, to 1st November, 1909, of cost of running a motorvan 60 miles per working day, less 20 days in for repairs, per year, is based on the actual cost of running 39 vans on the road, ignoring the first year's running costs as being too favourable. That means 28 vans for their second year, nine vans for their third year, two vans for their fourth year, or 39 vans in all. I now think I may safely take depreciation at seven years : 2 s. d.

Depreciation (seven years) ... 63 0 0 Repairs 55 16 10 Tires ... 37 8 10 Motor spirit (including tax) 50 7 6 Driver's wages (highest paid) 83 4 0 Oil, grease, and lamp oil ... 10 10 0 Washing expenses ... 9 10 0 Insurance (third party only) 6 0 0 Total ... £315 17 2

There are 308 working days in the year, less 20 days off the road for repairs, or 288 days at 60 miles per day, which gives 17,280 miles a year, and this, at 40. per mile, equals £324 a year. That allows a margin of £8 for increased cost of tires, and, if I take eight years for depreciation (and I see no reason against it), this gives another£8, or £16 in all, for increased cost of tires.Yours faithfully,

LETCESTER BARWELL.
