Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Over half of the UK's road haulage employers report literacy and numeracy problems in the workforce, warns the Road Haulage and Distribution Training Council (RHDTC).

The recently published RHDTC report "Basic Skills in the Road Haulage and Distribution Sector" suggests the sector has the lowest level of basic skills in any major UK industry, with 52% of employers reporting problems.

John Bowman, RHDTC operations manager, says: "Current levels of literacy and numeracy in the industry are inadequate, given the changing nature of the sector, the systems it uses and As part of its Workforce Development Plan the RHDTC aims to gain funds for training and development from the Government's Basic Skills Agency.

"The industry, helped by employers, trade unions, and local training organisations, has to find ways for individuals to develop reading and writing skills, enabling them to play a full part in the current and future road haulage workforce." says Bowman. "I am keen to hear from employers on how to work together to tackle this problem."
