BLACKWATER BYPASS

• The Department of Transport has confirmed that a 3.81an (2.3 miles) bypass to take the A30 around the village of Blackwater near Redruth in Cornwall is to go ahead.

NEW A9 LINK

• The £240 million A9 project which has halved the jour ney time from Perth to Inverness, will be opened on August 19.

According to Robert Cowan, Highlands and Islands Development Board chairman, access to the Highlands and Islands is a crucial factor in the economic development of the area. The A9 is vital for motoring tourists and commercial goods.

BRIDGE SURVEY

• An independent firm of consulting engineers has been appointed by the Department of Transport to carry out a condition survey on the Department's concrete bridges.

The purpose of the survey is to allow a forecast of bridge maintenance requirements and it may include recommendations to amend the design standards and specifications in the future.

M6 SERVICES

• A new service area on the Northern section of the M6 opens next week, It is right on junction 38 (A685) in Cumbria and is called Tebay Junction 38. It is 1.6km south of the existing Tebay West services, which are open only to Northbound traffic. Because the new Tebay Junction 38 is on a roundabout by the junction, either North or Southbound traffic can use the services.

Included is a 24-hour cafeteria, bar, toilets and showers. M6 Diesel Services on the site provides diesel bunkering, petrol and LPG. There is parking for 80 lorries.

The new service area is to be opened on Thursday, August 15 by Agriculture Minister Michael Jopling.

WESTERN WORKS

• Work is to start soon on a 9.6km (6 mile) stretch of dual carriageway on the A303, the main cross-country LondonWest Country route. The project will replace "poorly aligned" single carriageway between Amesbury and Thruxton, west of Andover and should be completed within two years.
