Despite his appearance, accent and dynamic approach to his job, Bruce MacCormack, the new marketing director at NCL, is not a transatlantic whiz-kid.

He goes to great lengths to establish his British nationality, and though he has spent a great deal of his working life in America or associated with American companies, he was educated at Beckenham Grammar School, in Kent, and before joining NCL he was general manager of the Wincanton Group (Unigate) Ltd, with headquarters in the heart of Somerset.

When Sir Daniel Pettit described NCL earlier this year as "a sleeping giant wakening from his slumbers", he must have known that Dick Teager, the company's md, had Bruce MacCormack in the wings. It would be impossible to slumber for long with this man around. His day starts at his desk at 8am and finishes at around 7pm, but he confesses to giving some thought to business on the hour-long commuting journey. His lunch break is something light, fast and not too far from the office.

Bruce MacCormack's marketing technique is well tried, having been tested with Hallmark Cards Inc, and the Hertz Corporation. Between 1969 and 1972. he was general sales manager for Hertz in the UK, and set up the first national sales organization in Britain.

Bruce MacCormack drives himself fast and hard and those who work with him must surely be prepared to go at the same pace. There is a toughness in his character common to most successful businessmen. At the same time there comes through a warmth and friendliness essential to all salesmen who believe that before selling anything, they must sell themselves. As proof of his selling ability surelythe best example is how he gained admission, quite openly, to the Royal Yacht Club when he owned a boat that most other members would have used as a dinghy. Despite his very busy life Bruce finds lots of time for his family, his sailing, his badminton, and an occasional trip to Vancouver.
