Sir Alec Cairncross has accepted the invitation of Anthony Crosland, Secretary of State, DoE, to act as chairman of the group of independent advisers who are to assist in the reassessment of the Channel Tunnel project. Sir Alec, Master of St Peter's College, Oxford, was head of the Government Economic Service from 1964 to 1969, and is a former Professor of Applied Economics at Glasgow University.
