ONDONDERRY, reeling from the B Report shock, will make a last-ditch stand to save its rails. Political leaders, industrialists and unions are fling a united front against the proposed closures. )ughout Northern Ireland reaction to the drastic pro Is of the B Report was indignant. Words of ome to some of the recommendations were drowned le roar of protest from places where B— — wants Government axe to fall. The overloading of Ulster's Is, which many expect to follow implementation of the ■ rt, brought sharp comments from the motoring Lnizations. Trade unions are planning a programme of m and B--'s redundancy suggestions have been lemned."

all has a dreamlike " we've been here before" quality, i't it? But if you think the constantly maligned Dr. B. caused another rumpus, on the other side of the water time, you're wrong: for " Beeching " read " Benson ". the recommendations and the reactions are in many s as alike as their surnames' initial letters.

rom a practical point of view, one of the big results kely to be a sizeable rail-to-road switch by the Ulster nsport Authority, with resultant demand for vehicles staff.

Woman at Work

A COPY of the English summary of the DAF house " journal Her Dafbiad recently came into my hands. My eyes seemed automatically to jump to one item on the front page headed—A Woman at the wheel. Not of "course that The Hawk—a gentleman—could be guilty of prejudice against lady drivers.

However, the item in question concerned Anneke, whose not inconsiderable claim to fame is that she pilots one of the 16 big DAF coaches belonging to the Scaldis Coach Co. in Bergen-op-Zoom and Rotterdam, carrying workers employed in the port of Rotterdam. Anneke, it seems, has had a great deal of experience of long-distance driving, having taken tourists and pilgrims many times to France, Germany and Spain.

DAF, interested in lady drivers of buses and lorries. invites each and every one of them to attend a get-together at the factory in Eindhoven. Names and addresses of interested parties should be forwarded to the company's public relations department in Eindhoven.

Diesel Snobbery

WHEN a diesel-engined car had been filled up with dery

at a garage near Stratford-upon-Avon recently, the driver said that he needed lubricating oil and asked the proprietor to recommend a brand. Unable to cite an oil recommended by the engine makers, the proprietor suggested a heavy-duty type which lorry drivers frequently requested. " You propose to put lorry oil into my car?"

said the car driver with considerable umbrage. "Of course not." Yes," said the proprietor, " a lorry engine is a very fine piece of machinery and this is a fine grade of oil." Nonsense!" replied the man, and drove.off. Would it have been a different story one wonders if the proprietor had said the oil was highly refined?
