• Following a merger with several small haulage concerns, Edwin Gowers and Sons Ltd, of Sheffield, successfully applied to the Yorkshire deputy LA, Mr M. Gosnay, in Sheffield last week, for what was described as an "umbrella" application for an 0 licence to cover the enlarged fleet of .52 vehicles and 10 trailers.
The court was told that the company, which is the main retail outlet for Rights Biscuits Ltd, had no maintenance facilities of its own but contracted all such work to an outside garage.
Earlier, a DoE vehicle examiner, Mr D. Andrew, told the deputy LA that of our vehicles and one trailer inspected on September 6 1970 one vehicle had received an immediate GV9 and one a delayed GV9. Because of the lack of facilities it was necessary for the examination to be held at a Sheffied heavy goods vehicle testing station.
At this time Mr Andrew was told that drivers inspected their vehicles daily and had a verbal agreement with a local garage to carry out monthly maintenance examinations. Records of defects were entered on log sheets.
Mr J. Clayton, depot manager, said that since the company had moved into new premises an updated maintenance system had been introduced. An agreement had been entered into with the FTA for the vehicles to be inspected at quarterly intervals and contracts had been made with two local garages to carry out all repairs and services.
