• While private transport mileage (mainly by car) increased by 124 per cent in the 10-year period 1959-1969, the number of passengers carried by public transport showed a decrease of 28 per cent over the same period.
These and many other figures are contained in the somewhat belatedly published "Passenger Transport in Great Britain 1969", prepared by the DoE and now available from HMSO. price 50p (by post 55p).
In 1969 passenger mileage by British Railways increased by three per cent while the mileage of passengers by bus and coach decreased by two per cent. The total of single-deck buses reached a peak of 39,199 in 1969, while the total of double-deck buses had dropped to 34,457 from a peak of 39,820 in 1963.
