LAST year Japan again produced twice as many commercial vehicles as she did passenger cars, according to the Japan Automobile Industry Association. Total number of commercial i produced in 1964 was 1,108,996 units—a 28.5 per cent increase over the 1963 output.

More than one half-633,800 units—were small, four-wheeled vehicles, while 359,478 ultra-light, four-wheeled commercial vehicles were produced. In the heavier range oj -lorries, 115,718 units were built, a production increase of 18.1 per cent over the previous year. Output of buses totalled 13.674 units, an increase of 5.8 per cent.

Exports of all types of trucks totalled 80,476 in 1964-39.7 per cent higher than in 1963. Small-sized, four-wheeled vehicle exports increased by 57.7 per cent to 51,556 units, while 26,832 heavier lorries were exported, representing a gain of 22.4 per cent over the preceding year. Ultra-lightweight vehicle exports, at 2,088 units, dropped, however, to a disaripointing 70 per cent of the 1963 figure.

Japan exported 1,735 buses last year-39.9 per cent more than in 1963, Japan's main vehicle market is South East Asia, but increased sales were also made to Australia. the United States, South Africa, Finland and Mexico.
