Ride Gets off to a Slow Start Despite Meters

'THE experimental park and ride I scheme introduced by Leeds Corporation on Monday started with very little support, only about 10 motorists taking advantage of the service on the first two mornings.

Claimed to be the first scheme of its type in this country involving the use of buses, the start of the park-and-ride service had been timed to coincide with the introduction of a large-scale restriction on parking in the centre of Leeds, involving the widespread installation of parking meters and the introduction of the second phase of a one-way traffic scheme.

The park-and-ride service has s been designed to ease congestion in the city and to save motorists the trouble of finding suitable parking accommodation in the city centre. • Two main roads are tapped by the park-and-ride car park, commuters from as far as Burley-inWharfedale and Ilkley in one direction, and Greengates, Shipley, Bingley and Keighley in the other being served by the new facilities.

A 10-minute-frequency express service links the park with the city centre between 7.30 and 9.30 a.m., with a similar frequency return service from the city between 4.30 and 6.20 p.m. A single fare of 9d. and return fare of Is. 6d., payable on the one-man operated buses, includes the cost of parking, and on this basis it is hard to see how the service can fail.

Maintenance of the car park is entrusted to the city engineers' department, the bus service being provided by Leeds City Transport. Motorists using the service in its early days are being asked to complete a questionnaire issued by Leeds University as part of the university's urban travel project, to see whether the park-and-ride service should be extended to other parts of the city.
