'JUDGMENT OF SOLOMON' From our Industrial Correspondent

THE Industrial Court, in a "judgment of.Solomon " last week, adjudicated n the long-standing dispute between the Transport and General Workers' Union it'd the London fruit and vegetable narkets over the introduction of a fivelay week. It upheld the porters' claim or a five-day week, while at the same ime conceding to the market tenants hat the market should remain open on .ix days of the week.

The judgment applies to four of the narkets—Borough Stratford, Brentford, ind Spitalfields'. In the case of the fifth narket involved in the dispute—King's -2ross—it felt it hest not to make a posiive award at this stage but to remit the tuestion for further discussion and, if mossible, agreement.

The Court considered that a five-day vorking week should be introduced for he porters at the four markets without ass of remuneration. It did not consider t to be justifiable, in relation to any of he markets or to any time of the year, hat the introduction of a five-day workng week should be brought about by neans of the obligatory closure of the aarket on Saturdays or Mondays.

The Court decided that a five-day vorking week should be introduced for he porters in each of the four larkets as soon as was practicable after scheme for introducing it had been ettled by agreement, or if necessary, by ward.

In "normal" weeks one half of the orters should he free on Mondays and le other half on Saturdays. In " special " reeks, particularly during the summer rhen it was desirable that a full or nearly ill number of porters should be availble on Saturdays and Mondays, work one by a porter on a day when ormally he would not be working would e in the nature of overtime work. If the parties fail to reach agreement

n all or any of the points within three lonths they will be at liberty to report Ich failure to the Court and the Court

after hearing the parties, determine le matter or point.
