A RETAIL dairyman and newsagent of
White Roding, Essex, Mr. T. E. Howells, has just had this modified Morris 12 built to his own design to enable him to combine dairy, paper and grocery deliveries.
The diesel-engined J2 is fitted with Borg-Warner automatic transmission, Tecalemit automatic lubrication and Michelin " X " tyres and was converted by R. W. Osborne and Son Ltd., of Saffron Walden. who are now able to offer a similar conversion in their standard range of retail-delivery bodies.
The new vehicle replaces separate transport for each section of the business and is showing considerable savings. Ihe body is in three compartments, the front one for newspapers having 2 ft-wide shelves built across the full width and along the offside, with access through a 2 ft. nearside door; Osborne converted the nearside cab door from sliding to hinged to permit this.
The second compartment is a 4 ft. 10 in.-long milk deck with space for three layers of nine crates (671 gal.) and has full-depth roller shutters which disappear into the roof. At the rear is a food compartment which is a standard Osborne
e4 four-shelf unit and has a space below it to carry a spare wheel and protective clothing.
Two employees operate the vehicle, It is first loaded at the dairy and then, with side shutters closed, travels 10 miles into Chelmsford' to pick up newspapers from the wholesaler.
On the journey to the delivery area one operator sorts the papers in the front compartment and when deliveries corn
mence he hands the papers over the waist-high bulkhead to the driver/milkman who selects the required milk and groceries and delivers all three items together. Towards the end of the round the newspaper sorter can assist with the deliveries.
The vehicle can also be used for general retail sales services, as it is well laid out to accept groceries, for example, and would also suit greengrocery work_
