The fuel bill for his fleet has risen by 16,110 a month. "You pass it on to the customer" he says. "It is a cost one cannot bear on one's own."
Business in Ireland is about to become uncompetitive, he predicts: "There is nothing I can do about it. Oil is a raw material that I have to buy."
O'Keeffe's responsibilities extend to his staff of 48.The company adheres to a strict safety procedure which includes a written schedule posted within the firm's fleet of vehicles advising employees of the correct action to take in an emergency. Each new driver gets a full month's training with a K&L driver. They also receive a driver's manual and are assessed annually on their driving practices.
The company is involved in many services within the local Millstreet, Co Cork community. O'Keeffe is secretary of Millstreet Tidy Towns Association and devotes two nights a week to cleaning and sweeping the streets.
He rates customer service as one of the strengths of his team: "I personally meet customers at least once per quarter, sit down with them and review service levels."
The firm's policy is to buy its vehicles new; over the past two years O'Keeffe has acquired eight Volvos and 15 Scania.s.
