SIZE: One (Scene) CONTRACT: Sand, gravel and asphalt Waiting tor Roadstone in Bunratty for the past 32 years, Terry Gavin started out as a full-time employee in 1973 and became a sole trader when he bought his own truck in 1977.1 started the ball rolling and a few years after that everybody followed," he says. "Roadstone had its own fleet of trucks in the garage but did away with the whole lot." While his colleagues all received redundancy payments, Gavin benefited in the long term with a guarantee of work for life.

An important element of the ongoing success of his relationship with Roadstone has been his levels of service and his flexibility. "Roadstone have been a good customer," he says. "I've always had plenty of work and given them a good service, both day and night. If they're working in the city by night I'll go in and do the asphalt, starting off at nine in the evening and finishing at one or two in the morning. You have to be flexible."

Another crucial area for him is keeping his truck in good order "I do my own maintenance and save a lot of money that way," he says.

"I always keep a good truck. It's never broken down. If you have a new truck you should have a good truck for four or five years. Keeping it serviced is the main thing. It's a good idea to know what can go wrong because if you catch it in time you can save yourself a lot of money."

Gavin is a strong advocate of the IRHA and believes all hauliers should become involved in order to maximise its effectiveness. "To be an effective lobby group you have to have everybody in the haulage association," he says. "A lot of people don't realise how good it is to be in it."
