Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

There's barely a month to go until the RAI Show in Amsterdam on 14-22 October, and new vehicles are being unveiled thick and fast...

Daf

IN A SURPRISE MOVE Daf has revealed details of its new big-cab flagship tractor more than a month before it makes its official debut at the Amsterdam truck show. The successor to the XF95 —the XF105 — features a revamped interior and minor external changes, including to the grille and roof.

More significantly, Daf has lowered the XF105's engine hump by 150mm without raising the cab, providing a semi-fiat floor with increased headroom in the Spacecab and Super Spacecab There's been a real clear-out of the floor area, with levers moved up to the dash or steering column, further improving cross-cab access.

The Dutch truck maker has also boosted its big cab's storage space, including a 45-litre fridge capable of taking large bottles stored upright.

Following the example of the Iveco Stralis, the XF105's steering wheel now features integrated push-button controls for the "Bremsomat" downhill speed control, cruise control and mobile phone. The wheel itself is fitted with an optional airbag.

Underneath the cab is the latest Euro-4 MX 13-litre straight-six complete with selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Operators can spec the MX at 410,460 and 510hp: a 560 rating is in the pipeline. Moving the air tanks and other chassis furniture inside the main rails has made room for the SCR system's 50 or 74-litre AdBlue tanks.

• See page 42 for a test of the XF95.530— and a surprise result.

Scania

With the confirmation of its Euro4 and 5 plans, Scania has revealed a new 610hp rating for its V8, making Europe's most powerful production truck engine— for now. More significant than its power is the 3,000Nm of torque; 200Nm more than anyone has yet achieved in an on-road application.

In fact more torque is promised on all its engines at Euro-4 and 5. Scania's five and six-cylinder engines will use EGR technology for Euro-4, but cooling considerations mean the V8 units will need SCR. To satisfy the incentive-led German demand, Euro-5 engines in all three capacities will be made available next year.

To match the torque increases, Scania will be replacing its gearboxes: higher torque capacities haven't stopped the Swedes shaving up to 69kg off their weight.

They will include a new concept for Scania: a straightforward sixspeeder for its 230 and 270 engines. The mid range will be catered for with a pair of eight-speeders (with and without a crawler). At the higher end will be three range-change/ splitter 12-speeders: direct drives with and without two crawlers and a heavy-duty overdrive box, again with two crawlers

Volvo

Volvo has unveiled its new FM and FH ranges with a brand new 13-litre six-cylinder engine.

The D13A replaces the D12 family which has been around since 1993. It's available in four ratings from 400 to 520hp, all with more torque than their predecessors. An EGR version of the D12F offers a Euro-4 solution for SCRresistant operators Although neither model looks significantly different from outside, the interiors have had a major makeover. Four new trim levels are supported by detail changes to the instrumentation.

• For a full description of the new FM and FH models see next week's Commercial Motor.

MAN

MAN is claiming three "world premieres" at RAI, including the new TGM 18-tonner.

To satisfy the diverse needs of the ever-growing rental market MAN has gone for eight wheelbases, three cabs and three six-cylinder common-rail D08 engines, rated at 240, 280 and 326hp. These are designed to offer high levels of torque at low speeds From next spring Euro-4400 and 436hp versions of the D20 engine will be on sale with SCR.

MAN's second attraction is the hybrid XLX cab for the TGA tractor range. Designed as a cost-effective cab for international long-haul work it will more likely be an advanced fleet option for UK operators.

It fits between the fleet XL and flagship XXL: a low, wide design gives the driver just under 2m headroom in a 2.44m-wide cab. •
