Morrisons staff in Scotland are to vote on industrial action over hours. Guy Sheppard reports.

DRIVERS AT Morrisons' giant retail distribution centre in Bel!shill, Scotland, will be balloted on industrial action from Monday (12 September) in a row over new rotas and shift patterns.

Although the site is operated by Christian Salvesen, GMB union leaders blame the supermarket for the changes, which followed its take over of Safeway.

Stephen Baillie, GMB regional organiser, says some of the 170 drivers are being forced to work weekends for the first time in more than 10 years, "There has been a tradition that the longer you worked there, the more likely you were to work Monday to Friday,he explains.

Baillie adds that changes, which were rejected by a majority of more than nine to one in an earlier ballot, also mean that the opportunity to earn premiums for nighttime working is reduced.

"Salvesen have been on site for 16 years and we have a good relationship with them." he adds. "Morrisons are operating by diktat." Baillie says drivers' basic pay of £9.71 an hour compares badly with rates for similar jobs elsewhere in Scotland. The site currently employs more than 1,000 people and serves stores in the north of England as well as Scotland.

Christian Salvesen and Morrisons declined to comment.
