lordly row has broken out between Westminster Council and one of its most prominent resident bodies over the siting of a lorry park.
In this instance the council is refusing planning permission to the Parliamentary Works Directorate which wants to turn Black Rod's Garden beside the House of Lords into a lorry service area. The council's opposition to the plan has received the backing of several heritage groups including the Royal Fine Art Commission and the Victorian Society. Negotiations have been held suggesting that the Directorate modify its plans so that some of the garden is preserved.
God help any haulier who applied for permission to turn a historic site into a truck depot but it seems the Directorate can ignore the council's objections if it wishes since its plan carries Crown Immunity.
